I Was Hacked!

Today, I checked my Entrecard account messages and found one from ThatGrrl who complained about not being able to leave a comment on my personal blog because a weird popup came up. Needless to say, between classes I went to the Internet Cafe and clicked around my website.

An odd popup that looked like a PDF file came up and after checking my source code, I noticed an Javascript code inserted at the bottom of the page. It had a lot of odd characters which tipped me off. I checked my other websites which are hosted on the same account and saw the same code with just different characters in the same locations in the source codes.

How did I fix it?

Well, first I cried. Then I proceeded to upgrade my Wordpress to the latest version using the Automatic Upgrade plugin. I checked all the source codes after upgrading and they are gone. Yay!

Please let me know if you have ever had any experiences with being hacked and how you dealt with it :) .  Also please let me know if you notice anything strange going on with the website.

AND REMEMBER, BACKUPS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND!!!

  • Good to see that you’ve got a backup of your file while others will continue to cry and regret later..

Some weird code usually is inserted at the footer.php and I’m sure that’s what happened to you.

Moral of the story is BACKUP 3x

  • Oh my. It good that you got backup. Backup is indeed very important.

  • Now this is a major cause of concern. I had a blog that displayed two versions, a lead generation site- but never got any leads but in my log file could see that people left their details. I consulted a network guru who told me my site was hijacked, but how he fixed it –Not sure..

  • Ask me about getting hacked and the ill-feeling that it brings with it. Good that you have solved your problem. It took me days to get back in shape and regain my sanity.

  • I just started my wordpress blog a week ago or so. I haven’t been hacked yet, but thanks to your info here I’ll know what to look for in the future if things seem to go wrong. It seems nothing is safe these days. Great info!

  • Glad that you were able to get everything back to normal without too much trouble. This is a perfect example of one why you should upgrade to the latest version of wordpress and two always make backups on a regular basis. I have never been hacked personally but know some people who have and unfortunately not everyone recovers from it as easily as you did.

  • Thankfully i’ve never been hacked but backing up is crucial and it’s only when something bad happens that people tend to realize it :-)

  • When you first realize you may have been hacked you need to decide your course of action. Your initial reaction may be to disconnect your computer from the Internet or shut it down entirely to break the connection with the hacker. Depending on the situation this may be the way to go. However, you may find many more clues and gather more evidence by performing certain actions while the system is still live.

  • This is scary, I’m gonna check all my blogs today. Good to hear you got your site fixed…There are so many shady things going on on the internet that in this day and age that we just have expect something like this to happen eventually to all of us.

  • I used to skip the backup stage of wordpress upgrades. When my hosting companies server went down for ages recently I suddenly realised they were quite important. Regardless of hacking risks, backup often!

  • Same thing happened to me, I noticed an empty space about 100 mm hight below the footer. It took me a couples of days to realize it was in all my websites and it was a worm that it probably didn’t work cos it didn’t show anything just empty space. Any way I deleted the worm code from the index php on each website, and change the password on my host account.

  • one day i was hacked too, about 4 months ago. Some hacker got my primary mail account password (i have paypal, lot of forums, and some revenue programs with that mail) i was on messenger, and i started to receive mails about retreiving passwords from all the sites. i changed all my passwords, and now im fine.

  • When it comes to Wordpress, keep an eye on your dashboard and update whenever they recommend you should. At times I have implemented the Beta versions, mainly because they are updated daily.

As for backing up, your hosting company should do a daily backup as part of their routines, get friendly with the server admin and if anything goes wrong, get him/her to restore your backup.

  • wow, that sucks for you. damn hackers going about and doing nothing useful for others
