At times I have implemented the Beta versions, mainly because they are updated daily. As for backing up, your hosting company should do a daily backup as part of their routines, get friendly with the server admin and if anything goes wrong, get him/her to restore your backup. It took me a couples of days to realize it was in all my websites and it was a worm that it probably didn't work cos it didn't show anything just empty space.
